Finding the Funny—Humor for More than Just Laughs

with Marjetta Geerling

January 28, 2017

2:00-4:00 p.m.

Charles J. Fendig Library

3909 W. Neptune Street

Tampa, Florida 33629

In this two-hour workshop, learn to identify your kind of funny and how to use that humor to increase drama, highlight conflict, control pacing, and deepen characterization in your picture book, middle grade novel, or young adult novel. Please bring a work in progress to play with during the workshop. Picture book folks, bring a full manuscript; middle grade and young adult authors, bring a problematic chapter.

Marjetta Geerling is the author of the young adult novel FANCY WHITE TRASH (Viking, 2008), an American Library Association’s 2009 Best Books for Young Adults and Rainbow List selection. She holds an M.F.A. in Writing from Spalding University and is an Assistant Professor of English at Broward College. Marjetta is represented by Nicole Resciniti at the Seymour Agency. Marjetta is coming all the way from Broward County to be with us—don’t miss this presentation!

As always, we’ll have time for updates and celebrations, and door prizes. Those who want, may join us after the meeting at Kahwa Coffee (next door to the library).

This meeting is free for SCBWI members.

No registration required.

Our meetings are moving to a new, more-central location—Charles J. Fendig Library. 3909 W. Neptune Street, Tampa, Florida 33629. If you exit on Dale Mabry heading toward Kennedy Boulevard and Neptune will be a few lights up, and the library will be to the right. (GPS it, but it’s easy to find.) The library has a small parking lot, with additional parking diagonally across the street (see map below). This is a small, neighborhood library that doesn’t host many events and they are thrilled to welcome us.
