9:15 – 10:30 AM: I’ve Got an Idea – Come prepared with several ideas and we will discuss what you’ll have to do with the ideas to make a marketable picture book, including which ideas work and which won’t and how to make sure the concept is the strongest it can be.
10:30 – 10:45 AM: Break
10:45 – Noon: Connecting the Dots and Creating a Page-turner – How do you take your ideas and put them into a story structure to build your first draft? We’ll talk about types of structures, making all the scenes connect and build, and do an exercise about creating drama with page turns.
12:00 – 1:00 PM: Lunch
1:00 – 2:15 PM: Reduce, Reframe, Revise – How can a revision take an idea from good to a standout picture book? We’ll talk about process but also essential elements to nail the execution like point of view, economy of language, what art notes are helpful, and how to leave room for the art in your text.
2:15- 2:30 PM: Break
2:30 – 3:30 PM: First pages
3:30 – 4:30 PM: Commit to Submit – We’ll take you through an overview of the submission process from securing an agent to getting an editor’s attention and explore how to make your pitch stand out and get your manuscript noticed.
4:30 – 5:00 PM: Q&A
- Come prepared with two ideas to discuss.
- Bring three unpaginated copies of a full manuscript that you are prepared to work on for a pagination exercise.
- For a possible first page critique by presenters during the session, bring in an anonymous first page of a manuscript, 12 pt., double-spaced, starting at the top of the page.
