Sonia will talk about aspects of the picture book process – building a story within a story, and developing diverse and interesting characters. Bring a favorite book so we can discuss, and then create your own character during in-class exercises!

1:00 – 2:15 PM: Vanessa Brantley-Newton – Illustrator/Author
Vanessa Brantley-Newton takes us on a very intimate, hilarious and emotional journey to diversity in her life. She shares in this presentation her personal family background and how diverse her family is and also how black and brown people where first depicted in children’s book illustration. She introduces a cherished children’s book that would change her life and the lives of children around the world an also in children’s Lit. Buckle up cause you will go on a journey through the eyes, ears, heart and soul of the artist and advocate.
