GENERAL ASSEMBLY: All groups meet in large room before breaking out into separate workshops.

9:00 – 10:00 SESSION I: What is Middle Grade?

Middle grade is often referred to as the Golden Age of reading. But what does it mean to write for this age group? In this session, we will look at central themes in middle grade and clarify the parameters of writing for this audience.

10:15 – 10:30 Break

 

10:30 – 11:30 SESSION II: Exploring Three-Dimensional Middle Grade Characters and Voice

Characters are the center of any middle grade universe, no matter the genre. Learn some new and unconventional ways you can write characters that walk off the page. Your story leads with your voice. Discover how to bring your personal flair to your writing and ways to connect with your readers.

SESSION III: Market Analysis and How to Sell Your MG Novel

 

Learn what’s hot, and what’s not, in the middle grade market right now. Also, once you’ve written your novel, what’s next? How do you sell it? How is a book marketed once sold?

 

2:00 – 2:30 QUERY CRITIQUES

Please bring in two copies of your query letter.

 

2:30 – 2:45 Break

 

2:45 – 3:30 FIRST PAGE CRITIQUES

Please bring an anonymous first page for possible critique in front of a group.

 

3:30 – 4:00 Q&A

 

4:00-4:30          All groups meet for wrap-up in large room.
