Monthly meeting schedule:

Stacie Ramey

Saturday, October 21

From 1:00 – 3:00 pm

At the West Boca Raton Library

Label Me: Character Identity Crises & Development

Using self image development theories to form believable characters.

Are the kids really alright? From babies to teens we all struggle to overcome mini-obstacles. Does the squeaky baby get the toy? And more importantly, does he grow to be a winner or a whiner?  Was Jessica Rabbit really bad, or was she 'just drawn that way'? We will discuss self-identity, how it develops, and how we as writers can use our characters’ real life tests to develop emotionally dynamic, realistic, and interesting, walk-off-the-pages people we want to keep with us forever.

Bio: Stacie Ramey is the author of The Sister Pact, a contemporary realistic Young Adult novel which was named a YALSA 2016 Popular Paperback and a 2015 PSLA Top 40. Her sophomore novel, The Homecoming was awarded the Bronze Medal in the Florida Book Awards. Her third book, The Secrets We Bury will be released in March 2018. When she’s not writing, she engages in Netflix wars with her children or beats her husband in Scrabble, all while watching the Florida Gators and Penn State Nittany Lions play (Go Gators).

Save the date for these upcoming events! All meetings are on the 3rd Saturday of the month from 1 – 3 pm at the West Boca Raton library (see address below) unless otherwise stated.

November 18 – Joyce Sweeney: From Image to Inspiration 12:00 – 2:00 pm

Joyce Sweeney will share the story of her poetry collection, WAKE UP and will read selected poems. Then we will take imagery from the poems and move into prompts to add emotion and texture to our own WIP's. This workshop is for all genres, picture book through YA. Bring your laptop or notebook and be ready to write!

HOLIDAY PARTY on December 9th at Uptown Art Boca Raton from 1:00 – 4:00 pm. We can bring food and drinks to enjoy while painting two wine glasses each (we’ll have lots of creative fun and something beautiful to bring home or give as a holiday gift).

The cost is $30. Space is limited, so please RSVP as soon as possible. This is the only event listed where an RSVP is mandatory, because we need an accurate head count.

South Florida SCBWI Meeting Volunteers Mindy Alyse Weiss and Marjetta Geerling are now running these workshops. Contact Mindy Alyse Weiss to RSVP, if you have questions, or want more information:
